What to Do When Your Stove is Not Working

Take a look around the stove and look for obvious signs of damage or misuse. Check the power cord and inspect it for any fraying, splitting, or other visible signs of damage. Also check the back of the stove to ensure all wires are securely plugged in and no sparks are present. If you have an electric oven, check that the clock is set—sometimes this can cause problems with oven functions.

Some ovens have safety switches that need to be manually flipped in order for the stove to operate correctly. If your oven has a temperature selector, make sure the switch is engaged to the correct setting. Also look for a “Reset” button—this could be located at the top or near the controls and should be pressed if it’s become disconnected due to a power surge or outage.

The first thing to do when your stove isn’t working is to check the power source and make sure it’s plugged in securely. You should also check your circuit breaker or fuse box to make sure that the breaker dedicated to the oven hasn’t been tripped or that a fuse hasn’t blown. If either of these has happened, simply reset the breaker or replace the fuse to restore power and hopefully get your kitchen back up and running again.

If the power source to your oven is in good order, then you should start examining the gas flow to make sure that everything is in working condition. To do this, make sure the burners and flame ports are clear of any debris. A good way to do this is to pull out the burner grates and use a brush or compressed air to ensure that all of the ports are clean and free from blockage. This step should restore full gas pressure to your range and will help get it up and running again.
