Why Your Washing Machine Has Stopped Working and How to Fix It
Washing machine repairs Overport

Washing machines are complex appliances, but some common problems can be easily fixed. With the right knowledge of what causes a washing machine to stop working properly and how to identify these issues, you can get your machine running again without the help of a professional repair technician.

When your washing machine fails to power on, the first step is to check if there is an issue with the power supply. Make sure that the outlet your washer is plugged into is providing power. If it isn’t, check the circuit breaker to see if it has been tripped. If it has, reset the breaker and try turning on the washer again.

If your washer will turn on but won’t fill with water, the issue may be with one of the two timers or water valves. The check valve prevents the machine from filling while it is in spin cycle and is located behind the lower access panel at the back of the washer. The timer switch controls when water enters and should be free from debris or dirt. To test these components, disconnect power from your washer and use a multi-meter to check for continuity.

The inlet hose can become clogged or blocked, which can prevent water from entering your washer. Check and make sure the inlet hose is connected properly to the water and that there are no kinks or blockages. If needed, replace the inlet hose with a new one of the same size and length. Be careful when removing hoses as they may be under pressure which can cause them to spray out if disconnected too quickly.

The drain hose on your washing machine can sometimes become blocked or clogged with items such as lint, paper, or debris. To help prevent this from happening regularly make sure to carefully remove any obvious blockages from the hose before running a load of laundry. If you think that there might be something blocking the hose you can disconnect it and immerse into a bucket of hot water for a few minutes and inspect for any blockages. Carefully remove them using gloves and replace the hose before running another cycle.

Cleaning out detergent residue can help prevent the buildup of mildew, mold and detergent inside your washing machine. This is easy to do and can be done on a regular basis. Simply run an empty load with hot water on the longest cycle to loosen the soap scum. Be sure to use a cleaning product that is specifically designed for washing machines and free of harsh chemicals. When the cycle has finished, leave your machine door open after each use so it can properly air dry.
